Auburn commitment Jaylon Denson is one of the fastest rising high-school prospects in the country in the class of 2011. He showed great athleticism and physical play at Auburn’s camp in mid July and impressed the Tiger coaches enough to garner an offer. After a return visit for a campus tour 48 hours later, Denson decided to become an Auburn Tiger.
When talking about why he committed to Auburn so quickly after receiving his offer Denson said, “They’re a very family oriented coaching staff and family oriented team. Where I come from that’s big and when they offered, it just felt like an extension of my own family.” Denson says Coach Trooper Taylor and Gus Malzahn have been recruiting him to Auburn the hardest and those are the coaches he’s built the best relationship with so far. The Tiger coaches believe they’ve found a diamond in the rough in Denson. He’s not a polished product by any means. No high-school wide receiver is. He’ll need to work on his route running and adjust to learning a college offense as sophisticated as Gus Malzahn’s. What Denson does bring to the table however, is a lot of raw, natural ability and a physical mentality. Denson doesn’t compare his game to any other players or have a favorite wide-out he grew up trying to emulate. He simply says, “I just try to play hard”. He does play hard and very physically as well. Even though Denson doesn’t compare himself to anyone else, he’ll undoubtedly draw comparisons by Auburn fans to former Tiger receiver Courtney Taylor. Denson is 6’3” and weighs in close to 200 pounds at 190, so he has the perfect build for a wide-out. He also has a rarely talked about attribute which is a very long wingspan that helps him not only get his hands on defensive backs, but also go up and get balls over the heads of cornerbacks. He has enough speed to make plays in the SEC, with a listed 4.5 forty and has shown outstanding hands in recent summer camps. Those attributes, along with his outstanding physical play has made him one of the most talked about prospects of the summer. He dominated at the recent National Select 7 on 7 camp in Hoover and his stock will certainly continue to rise as the year progresses. That means the Auburn coaches will have their hands full trying to hold off other coaches coming in to recruit Denson. However, Denson says, “I’m 100% to Auburn” and he plans to be back in the fall for the Clemson game. In fact, Denson has already made one visit back to the Plains since he committed. “I spent last Saturday night down in Auburn and hung out with Kiehl Frazier. We just watched movies and played Playstation. It was fun. I like Kiehl.” So, I guess we can add smart to the list as well. He’s already making friends with his future QB. |
